I’m a big believer in having a cozy home. It’s your sanctuary, the place you spend the majority of your time. Creating a space of comfort, relaxation, and filling it with things you love is a must.
I knew that once I had my own home, I would fill it with everything I considered cozy. Things that put a smile on my face and gave me that warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Items that I consider lovely to look at, that would add a little something to the room it would be placed in.
Without going totally overboard, I went with the basic and simple ways to achieve a cozy home, which means anybody can do it!
6 Easy and Simple Ways to Achieve a Cozy Home
Blankets and Pillows
Pillows and throw blankets just scream cozy. There are so many different types of blankets and pillows you can buy – soft faux fur, thick knits, and even ones with cute designs.
I love having décor pillows on my couch, as well as blankets available all around for easy access. My husband loves it because he can just lay back on the couch and everything is there for him to have a quick nap after work. Even our guests love having the pillows to lean back on and blankets to wrap themselves in.
I have plenty around during the colder seasons, but once the sun comes out and the weather warms up, I transition a few to use on the outdoor patio.
Who doesn’t like oversized knit sweaters, fuzzy socks, and warm pj’s? These are the best pieces of clothing to lounge around in at home. Gather a small collection of clothing dedicated specifically for lounging in. Include a few sweaters, a pair of slippers, fuzzy socks, t-shirts, and some loose fitting pants or sweatpants.
Personally, I feel more feminine and much more like myself when I wear cute or flow-y clothing around the house and not just when I go out. If you’re more of a girly-girl, considering investing in a few clothing pieces, such as loose “house” dresses or skirts that you can easily move around in.
I love having my engagement and wedding photos around my home. It reminds me of the most wonderful time in my life. Having photos of your family, your friends, your husband, pets, and other fun memories around your home, can uplift your mood and put a smile on your face.
Shadowbox frames are trendy now, where you can put in whatever photos and mementos you like inside. It’s like a 3D scrapbook that you can constantly change with new photos and items, and they are so much fun to create! You can find these on Amazon, or if you live in Canada, Winners and HomeSense.
Warm Drinks & Yummy Food
I have a drink cabinet where I have a stash of yummy teas, coffee, and hot cocoa. My favourite teas are herbal, specifically floral or fruity teas. I also have relaxing tea for nighttime before bed, such as chamomile, rose, and lavender. If a cup of tea is not your thing, even hot cocoa with whip cream and cocoa powder sprinkled on top is a sweet treat to have!
Coffee is my go-to every morning, so I’m always stocked with yummy flavours such as french vanilla, hazelnut, or just a simple dark roast. Whatever it is, I’ve most likely got it. I also get creative and make homemade lattes and ice drinks.
Baked goods are also a must to have around the house, such as freshly baked blueberry muffins or chocolate chip cookies, or whatever dessert you prefer! They’re great to have after dinner with a warm drink snuggled up on the couch with all those blankets and pillows!
Fairy lights add a dreamy and whimsical atmosphere to any room. Try putting white lights in the living room for a brighter look, and warm lights for a more soft, calming effect in the bedroom. Wrap these lights around the bed frame, pin them to the wall, around curtain rods, your fireplace, or around even across your ceiling. Switch the lights off, and allow the glow from these tiny lights lure you into relaxation and dreamland.
Having candles around the house is a great way to add a pleasant fragrance throughout the home. Those soft, light scents, like vanilla, cinnamon, and birthday cake are my favourites. I also like the woodsy and sweeter scents such as apple cider or a douglas fir for the winter months. Mint, strawberry, anything fruity for the summer – wow, they can really add something to any room.
So there are my tips on how I made my home filled with comfort, love, and coziness. There are tons more ways to have a cozy home, but I like to keep it simple. If you have any other ideas for having a cozy home, let me know in the comments!
